itinerary
Landing at Keflavik Airport is like landing on a playground, thanks to its Legos-like facilities, spread out like gigantic building blocks. The airport characterizes the country; small, colorful, friendly and straightforward. Your driver, who will take care of you for the next 3 days, will be waiting to meet you the moment you leave the arrivals gate and will take you directly to your hotel.
Reykjavik is small for a capital city, but it excels in friendliness and charm. Your guide will be on hand to show you the main attractions, including the Houses of Parliament and the concert hall, Harpa. After exploring the city, you will meet the native breed of ponies, the Icelandic Horse, before boarding a whale watching boat and sailing in search of these majestic marine mammals.
Today, you will be guided around the Golden Circle, contemplating the mighty geysers, magnificent waterfalls and volcanic craters of Thingvellir National Park. Marvel at the Great Geyser, Iceland's most famous, and Stokkur, the most energetic. You will see the mighty Gullfoss waterfall and the dark blue waters that fill the crater of the Kerid volcano in Grimsnes. Later, you will go to the water by kayak on Lake Thingvallavatn.
Today is an adrenaline day, a jeep safari through the valley of Thorsmork. Explore the end of the glacier, Gigjokull, before a short hike to the Stakkholtsgja Gorge, where you will be rewarded with a view of a beautiful waterfall. A hike to Basar offers spectacular views and over 170 species of plants, moss and lichen, before ending the day exploring the waterfalls near Seljalandsfoss and Gljufrabui.
The Westman Islands (Vestmannaeyjar) are home to a number of large colonies of puffins, which you will find today when visiting the islands' volcanoes. The islands have experienced significant eruptions in relatively recent times and today you will hear all about the 1963 eruption that formed the new island of Surtsey. Other activities forced the evacuation of the island a decade later and hundreds of homes were buried by the lava flow.
Visit the otherworldly lava landscape of the Reykjanesskagi Peninsula. In the pristine Lake Kleifarvatn, you will learn how an earthquake in 2000 drained 20% from the lake's surface and how it regained its water levels by 2008. The next natural phenomenon is the geothermal area of Seltun. Here, you can see the impressive green, yellow and red soils, colored by sulfuric deposits. The final stop is at the lovely cliffs of Krysuvikurbjarg. Watch the powerful waves of the North Atlantic Ocean lapping against the island's shores as you observe rare species of shorebirds.
Rejuvenated by the beauty of Icelandic nature, it's time to leave. Your transfer will take you to the airport for your flight home.
